Read More Crossbreeding Using Savannah Goats: How & Why?
I started my commercial meat goat operation in 1962 by buying Spanish goats from a number of old-line volume breeders in the Texas Hill Country. I expanded the size of the herd as I was able to add ranch land and leased country. My herd size peaked in 2000 with about 1700 does. My family and I currently run about 750 does on 5 places and we also run Braford cows on 9 leased places where we use F-1 males on F-1 females; it works for us. We do multi-species grazing on some of the places, but we don’t usually run goats and cattle in the same pastures simultaneously.

In October 2010 we had the pleasure of being in Cummings, GA at the farm of Mr. Kenneth Mincey, owner of Mincey Marble Company and early importer of Boer goats. We were there to observe an embryo transplant program featuring recently imported Savannahs and to learn more of Kenneth’s plans for producing and disseminating full blood seed stock as part of his larger goal to enhance and expand the breed in the U. S. The Goat Rancher has graciously agreed to publish our observations, and subsequent developments as the saga continues.

The Pinkerton family burial plot near Covington, Texas seemed to be a perfect place for Frank and I to discuss the recent declines in American meat goat inventory. Travelling together, as we have, for over twenty years; I am always somewhat amazed that neither of us have lost our passion regarding this slow moving train called the American meat goat “industry”.
